Rechargeable batteries are very useful for us since we can recharge them and further use them along with our devices. There are huge benefits to using it because it saves money, is low-cost, and is long-lasting. People are always in doubt that rechargeable batteries can be used with remote control.
The answer is YES! Rechargeable batteries can be used in our TV, DVD, Home theater, and other home appliances’ remote controls. In earlier days, there are AA batteries used in remotes but nowadays, AAA batteries are most commonly used. The rechargeable versions of both AA and AAA batteries are available in the market.
There are some pros and cons to using the kind of reusable batteries, but there is no issue or harm to your remote control while you are using it.
Types of Cells used in remote controls
Most commonly AA and AAA cells are there.
AA batteries are now outdated in terms of remote controls. Nowadays, they are used mostly in clocks. The main reason behind this is, remote controls are smaller in size, so AAA batteries are suitable. most remote manufacturers are looking to design their product lightweight, so using Triple-A batteries is a factor to make them lightweight.
But some of the remotes, still use AA.
AAA single cell is 10.5 mm in diameter and 44.5 mm in length, and a single cell AA is 49.2–50.5 mm in length and 13.5–14.5 mm in diameter.
Size should matter. When you see the cell pouch, you can understand what type of cells should be used. In addition, the details will be labeled on the remote as well as on the user’s manual.
If your remote is new, You should likely use AAA batteries.
Technical specifications should be considered
For AAA cells:-
Voltage – 1.2 Volts
Capacity – 800 mAh
For AA cells:-
Voltage – 1.2 Volts
Capacity – 1300 mAh
NB:- It is ok if you have 1.5V cells.
Should buy low self-discharge cells for a better life
Are they rechargeable?
Not all batteries are reusable, but you should buy batteries that can be chargeable features. Rechargeable cells are available for both categories.
The cost of them is higher than the normal batteries. But when you buy a set of batteries, the pack may contain 3 – 5 cells based on the price (Higher units are also available). They can be reused for up to 4 years. Most of the companies guarantee them for 3 years for sure.
In addition, you also should buy a recharger device where you put batteries on it and then plug it into the power outlet to recharge it.
Advantages
If you hate adequately buying the cells for your remote control, you can buy rechargeable batteries. Whenever the cells are drained, you can put them into the charger, and after completely recharged, take them to the remote for further use.
So many remotes in the market now come with backlit features, when each time you press on the key, It backlit under the keys. So the charge drain so fast. So using rechargeable batteries is an ideal solution.
If you are using the universal remote control, one remote for almost all the devices at your home, the battery will drain so fast. So buying new cells when each time draining will cost a lot. So, here comes the importance and disadvantages.
Some pros are here
- Saves your money
- Higher lifespan
- Easy to recharge
- Low drainage rate
- Environment-friendly
- Less time to take fully charged
- Reusable up to 1000 times
- Ideal for smart controls having a lot of features
Cons
- May cause a lower voltage rating (But do not worry about using it with the remote control)
- The initial cost is high (But don’t think about batteries for the next 3 -4 years)
- Should buy the branded product for quality and longlasting
- Should avoid falling down because it may reduce the lifespan
How long will it take to completely recharge a battery?
This completely depends on the charger you are using. But normally it takes 3 – 5 hours to get it fully charged. If you buy a cheap and low-quality reusable battery and the charger, it takes more time to fully charged and the draining rate is also high. This is my experience.
I recommend you have Lithium batteries with the least charging time. It’s worth using Lithium cells rather than Alkaline. There is more cost for Lithium cells. But worth it.
Do not overcharge
You should not overcharge the batteries because it’ll cause damage and subsequently bulge it. In most chargers available in the market, there is an indicator available as a display to check the status of charging. If you are using an old model charger that doesn’t have this feature, it’s better to replace that or you need to check the charge status using a multimeter.
Or, just plug the charger into the power outlet for just 3 hours and then remove it, and then use it.
