Xfinity Remote Not Working? Here’s Easy Fixes You Can Try

If your Comcast Xfinity remote is not working with your TV, I have some troubleshooting tips that I can share with you to get it back up and running. These practical tips help you troubleshoot by yourself. The common issues are dead batteries, IR emitter issues, programming errors, etc. Sometimes, your remote may show abnormal activity such as blinking in RED, BLUE lights, etc. The issue is with almost every model.

When your remote is up and running by the tips shared here, please feel free to share.

How to fix the Xfinity remote not working?

Change battery [Remote blinking RED light]

When you press any key on the remote, the top LED will blink RED light 5 times and stay OFF. This is a clear indication that the batteries are drained by almost 95% and your remote may not work. The only solution is to change the batteries and insert fresh batteries.

It is recommended to change both batteries rather than just changing one.

Check if the IR transmitter is working or not

The Xfinity remote is still not working even after changing the batteries. You can follow here. Check whether the remote IR transmitter is working fine. When you press any key, the IR LED will blink. If you cannot see it with your naked eyes, just point the remote at a mobile phone camera, press all the keys, including the POWER key, and check the IR sensor light blinking.

If it is not working, you have to change the IR sensor.

Also, make sure that there are no obstacles between the remote and the TV/Cable box.

Reset and reprogram the Xfinity remote

Reset methods may differ in different models. I’ll show you all of them separately.

Comcast Xfinity XR 15

Press and hold the ‘A’ and the ‘D’ buttons on the Xfinity XR15 remote control until the red color on the LED changes to Green/Blue.

Next, press 9, 8, and 1; the LED blinks twice.

To reprogram the remote, press and hold the ‘Xfinity’ and ‘i’ (Info) buttons simultaneously until the LED turns from RED to Green/Blue.

Then enter the code visible on the TV screen to reprogram the remote.

Xfinity XR16

Press and hold the “i” and the “home” buttons until the LED blinks. Then press the POWER, Last (<-arrow>, and the volume down (-) buttons in a sequence to complete the resetting process.

Xfinity XR2/XR1/XR5, and XR11 Comcast cable non-voice remote

Press and hold the setup button until the backlit of the Power button blinks twice. Then press 9,8, and 1 to complete the reset.

Reprogram the remote with the right Xfinity remote codes

I already published the Xfinity remote codes list for you. Refer to it for getting the correct codes.

Programming instructions

  • Press the Setup button on the remote until the red light turns green. If there is no SETUP button, press the Xfinity and Info buttons simultaneously.
  • Enter the 4- or 5-digit Xfinity remote codes for your brand
  • If the code is entered correctly, the LED will blink GREEN TWICE.
  • When the LED blinks RED, you have entered the wrong code.

Power recycle the Remote, TV, and Box

Sometimes old-school methods will work. Power recycling the entire connected device. Disconnect cables from the TV, Xfinity box, and remove the batteries from the remote for a while. It is recommended to stay disconnected for almost 3 – 4 minutes. Then reconnect accordingly. Reprogram the remote. Then start using the remote.

Confirm the remote mode

When you are trying to control your TV with the Xfinity remote, make sure the remote has been set to control your TV, not the cable box or any other device. There are device selection keys at the top of the remote to change the mode.

Use the Xfinity remote app

If none of the given troubleshooting methods don’t work, your remote may have serious issues like a circuit board issue, conductive electric paint deterioration, etc. So, it may not be fixed by yourself. You can change the remote from their official showroom, or you can download and install the Xfinity remote app on your smartphone to control.
